Fringe Benefit Rates

Some funders permit fringe benefits to be included in the budget portion of grant applications; however, others may specify in their proposal guidelines that fringe benefit costs are not allowable. ┬áBe sure to carefully check the organization’s application materials for specific guidance.

At Williams, fringe benefits are calculated as a percentage of the salaries and wages requested. The following table lists the current rates by job classification:

Summer (June – August)
Principal Investigator 9.0% If annual salary is less than $117,000
(Social Security base)
3.0% If annual salary is greater than $117,000
Technician/Secretary 9.0% If part time or temporary employee
37.5% If full time employee with full benefits
Student 9.0%
Academic Year (September – May)
Principal Investigator 37.5%
Technician/Secretary 9.0% If part time or temporary employee
37.5% If full time employee with full benefits
Student 0%
